How to Play Sudoku

Sudoku is a classic 9x9 logic puzzle. Fill the empty cells with numbers 1 to 9 so every row, column, and 3x3 box contains each number exactly once.

Basic Sudoku Rules

The goal is to complete the board by using logic. A correct Sudoku solution never repeats a number in the same row, column, or 3x3 box.

Rows

Each horizontal row needs numbers 1 to 9 once.

Columns

Each vertical column also needs numbers 1 to 9 once.

Boxes

Each 3x3 box follows the same no-repeat rule.

Find Your First Move

Start with the most crowded row, column, or box. Look for missing numbers and check where each number can legally fit. If only one cell can take a number, place it confidently.

Use Notes When the Puzzle Gets Harder

Notes, also called candidate marks, help you remember possible numbers for a cell. Keep notes clean and update them after every confirmed placement.

Avoid Guessing

Good Sudoku solving comes from proof, not luck. Before placing a number, check the row, column, and 3x3 box. If a number is not proven, keep scanning or use notes.

  • Scan one number at a time from 1 to 9.
  • Recheck nearby cells after every placement.
  • Use hints when you want to learn the next logical step.
